After a series of postponements, 94 second-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students from College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), together with their parents, finally received their caps and pins during the Secunda Ceremonia: Pampanga State University Nightingales’ Capping, Pinning, and Candle Lighting Ceremony held at the University Auditorium on October 14.
Originally scheduled for September 25, the event had to be moved due to inclement weather, consecutive class suspensions, venue unavailability, and a security threat received by the university.
In an interview with The Industrialist, Mark Haizon David, one of the event organizers, said that the constant rescheduling of the ceremony posed challenges to the organizing team.
“We had to cancel our bookings and rentals with suppliers, then pay additional rebooking fees for stage decorations, food, sound system, and other logistics,” he explained.
Meanwhile, in her message, Sherlyn Dizon, Chairperson of the Department of Nursing, revisited the history of nursing while upholding the legacy of Filipino nurses.
“Passionate and competent Filipino nurses remind us that it is more than a profession—it is a calling,” she said.
While serving as the Florence Nightingale of the event was Madel M. Laxamana, who led the lighting of candles symbolizing compassion and service in the nursing vocation.
Dr. Adonis David, Dean of CAS, highlighted the acronym “H.O.N.O.R.I.A.N.” which stands for Humanitarian, Outstanding, Noble, Orderly, Resilient, Innovative, Alert, and Nationalistic—qualities that embodies Honorian Nursing students.
Representing the batch, Karen Z. Lacerona of BSN-2A who delivered the words of gratitude, said the event’s success felt “very fulfilling” after months of preparation and delays.
"Akala namin po hindi pa po matutuloy to… Simula nung last school years, nag-start na po talaga kami for preparation ng capping and pinning. And from first year hanggang second year, parang ibang fulfillment po yung nabigay sa amin after na ma-receive yung cap and pin," she said.
With the theme “Lighting the Path of Service: Building the Legacy of Compassionate and Competent Filipino Nurses,” the second pinning ceremony marked their transition as student nurses, ready to begin their journey in the healthcare field.
