Student-athletes representing Pampanga State University (PampangaStateU) in the upcoming State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) III regional meet asked for blessings during the observance of Ash Wednesday on February 18.
The university marked the solemn start of Lent, or Miércoles de Ceniza, through a Mass at the Dr. Ernesto T. Nicdao Sports Center, drawing athletes, coaches, students, faculty, and staff.
With the regional competitions set from February 21 to 27 in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija, the Mass served as a moment of reflection for the university’s delegates days before they compete.
Ashes were solemnly imposed on the foreheads of attendees as a reminder of human mortality and the call to repentance.
In his homily, Rev. Fr. Joseph P. Valencia, who presided over the Eucharistic celebration, underscored the meaning of the ritual.
“When the ashes are imposed on our foreheads, we are reminded that we are all equals and that life is temporary. Remember that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return,” he said.
Fr. Valencia also encouraged attendees to reflect on their lives, embrace humility, and observe the Lenten season through prayer, fasting, and acts of charity.
